The area around Tarpum Caye is covered with hundreds of square miles of flats and is known as the "Permit Capital" of the world. The surrounding flats go from 6 inches on top
and can drop to 75-100 foot of water on the edges, which makes them a perfect habitat for permit which like a quick escape to deep water. Permit can be found on these flats in good numbers, and with tarpon in the lagoon, and bonefish on the western flats you have a perfect opportunity for the “Grand Slam”. Most productive flats are only 5 – 10 minutes away from the Kingfisher dock.
The donation of this trip was arranged by Chip Bates and Doug Schlink of Angler Adventures. Lodge owner Charlie Leslie has agreed to offer a full comp for 2 anglers for 4 night/3 day fishing package. Any months of the year except March, April, and May are available. Here are Doug Schlink's personal comments: "Brad, this place is a permit fisherman's Valhalla. There is a ton of WADING to tailing permit. They are tough - the water's skinny and that
water is gin clear out on those ocean flats, but it is not unusual to get 20 - 30 legit shots a day! And when the tides are wrong on the permit flats, there's a lagoon full of tarpon (not push overs either as they're gorging on glass minnows) 3 pole pushes from the dock - or there are bonefish flats. Or sometimes the big migratory tarpon show up on the reef flat out in front. I really love this place!" On page 89 of the March/April issue, FFSW Magazine ranks Tarpum "Tarpon" Cay Lodge as one of the top "Hot Spots" where a grand slam of permit, bonefish, and tarpon is a real possibility. |

addition to Stripers Forever is a member of the Coastal Conservation Association, American Littoral Society, Plum Island Surfcasters, and the New England Saltwater Flyrodders. Stripers Forever's annual fishing survey shows that some of the coast's hottest fishing in recent seasons has been the area around the mouth of the Merrimack River, Captain Crue's home waters. This is a 4 hour trip. Scheduled at dawn, on a good day, it could provide a great chance for a big bass on a fly, then slide into the office just a little late! |
