One of our members alerted us this morning that Wild Oats in Portland was advertising wild Chatham Mass. striped bass fillets for sale. This is illegal in Maine. Possession is for personal use only, and you are only allowed to possess one fish that fits in our state's slot limits. We have alerted the authorities who should speak with them - they probably just don't know. If, however, you frequent this store, you might speak to the manager yourself and let him/her know that striped bass are - with very good reason - a gamefish in Maine as they should be everywhere.
As the season progresses we may see more of this, and it should be brought to the attention of Maine's department of marine resources enforcement division. The phone numbers to report violations are St. George to Kittery 633-9595 and St. George to Canada 667-3373. Gamefish status is important in Maine, let's stand up for it. Brad Burns
