RE: HR 1286
Dear Congressman
I am writing to ask your support of HR 1286, a bill seeking game fish status for striped bass along the Atlantic. Connecticut long ago saw the wisdom of game fish status for striped bass. And in the intervening years, other states including Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Maine have done the same. Yet wild striped bass are – by nature- highly migratory, and unfortunately they must spawn and pass through other states where intensive commercial fishing still exist. A federal law is, therefore, the only way to truly protect this valuable public resource.
In our state recreational saltwater fishing is a quality of life issue for a hundreds of thousands of citizens. According to the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s 1996 National Survey of Recreational Fishing and Hunting, anglers enjoy 934,000 angling days each year pursuing striped bass in Connecticut waters. And as you might expect when anglers go fishing the local economy benefits. The same survey reports that recreational anglers in our state spend a total of $284,000,000 annually on a multitude of things from tackle and boating needs, to lodging and food.
For all those reasons I ask you to please co-sign HR 1286. Lets give striped bass along the Atlantic the protection and respect they deserve. Thank you for your attention to this matter and I look forward to hearing your decision.
Signed.
