The attached amendments are a foundation for improving future management decisions regarding striped bass. Health issues associated with consuming wild striped bass as well as the socioeconomic cost of allowing excessive catch and allocation based on historic prejudices towards commercial fishing have been kept from the light of day by representatives of the commercial fishing industry. Without clear directives from the legislature, this will continue and fishery management in MA will suffer for it.
Striper fishermen everywhere can thank Senator James Timilty for his understanding of the issues surrounding striped bass management, and for his willingness to promote the changes that are needed to current practices. He deserve our thanks.
