Attached to this page is a letter from the State of Maryland DNR (Annapolis) asking for public comment on an application to have its commercial striped bass fishery certified as healthy, honestly and soundly managed, and sustainable. Stripers Forever disagrees with the assertion that the commercial fishery in Chesapeake Bay meets the criteria for the TAVEL Certification, and a copy of our statement is attached. There is a week left in the comment period, which leaves time to make your own comments if you wish.
The commercial striped bass fishery in Chesapeake Bay is an integral part of the overall coastwide management plan which, we believe, is overharvesting large fish to the detriment of the striper population and therefore to the 3,000,000 plus U.S.residents who fish for them recreationally, and to the thousands of individuals who make all or part of their living from this recreational fishery. We see a number of other problems with the commercial fishery, and some of our views are covered in the attached letter. Brad Burns
