We have some great folks involved with SF, and I would not single out any one above the rest.  I do hope, though, that I will never have to advocate for the future of recreational saltwater fishing without Al Ristori on my side.  Two weeks ago, the Fisherman Magazine's New England division published some negative commentary on striped bass gamefish, written by someone who claimed to be a recreational angler.  We have heard this guy's rhetoric before, and have our suspicions as to his real motives.  The article was rubbish, and several on our board were very disappointed to see the Fisherman - normally a voice for conservation and public fishing rights - publish it.  This week, Al Ristori, who writes their conservation column set it all straight.   We have not attached it to this broadcast because attachments set off so much spam ware.  You can read it as a pdf file, though, by going to our website at www.stripersforever.org.  It is the latest listing under Articles and Research.

I'm going to tread on a little dangerous ground by calling your attention in Al's story to his explanation of the NJ bonus fish quota that comes from their pre-gamefish commercial quota.  It is not the only valuable history lesson in this piece.  If there is one area where otherwise knowledgable folks have missed the boat it is in not understanding the war that has been waged by guys like Tom Fote and Al Ristori to keep the ASMFC from just assigning that quota to other commercial fishing states.  Anyway, read it and pass it on.  Al speaks for many of us when he says that he is going to continue to advocate for striped bass gamefish as long as there is anyone that will listen.  Actually, these days, I think that more and more folks are listening.  Check out Ristori's rebuttal at www.stripersforever.org.
