Stripers Forever – The primary thrust of Striped Bass Gamefish 2006 will be an afternoon symposium featuring
an impressive list of speakers who will address the various aspects of designating recreationally important saltwater species as game fish. The information from the symposium will be compiled into a document that SF will energetically promote. It will become an important policy resource for future management decisions regarding striped bass. Following the presentations we’ll have a dinner and auction with the profits going to finance the symposium as well as our continued advocacy work. We need your help to make this important day a success.
First, we need you, if at all possible, to attend. Attendees of the symposium will learn first hand from Dr. Nelson what making redfish gamefish in FL did for recreational fishing in that state. You will hear how the commercial industry sued, claiming that recreational only fishing was an unfair allocation, but lost, because the courts found no fairer way of allocating a scarce resource than catching your own. Listen to Rob Southwick explain the economics of striped bass fishing, and Mike Freeze, one of the world’s great authorities on striped bass aquaculture debunk the attacks made against this growing industry by commercial sources. Join us in the evening for an excellent buffet, to celebrate our mutual commitment to a bright future for striped bass fishing, and to bid on bounty of items donated by our fellow
recreational fishermen. A full house will help drive home our point to the fishery managers who persist in believing this fishery should be managed for the pleasure of less than 1% of the participants. You can order tickets to the symposium, the banquet, or both with paypal through our website, or with a check by mail.
Second, you will see on our website www.stripersforever.org that we have some outstanding donations for the auction and raffles, but more are needed. While fishing related donations are vital, they are by no means the only things of value at an event like Striped Bass Gamefish 2006. Donations such as jewelry, home furnishings, gift certificates, artwork, personal services, or even buying an ad in the program are all very welcome. Almost any item with broad appeal is a desirable donation. If you want to discuss or simply offer a donation click on
“contact us” on the website and send us an e-mail.
Don’t forget that May is a great time to fish the Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastlines. Find the Tackle Shops and Guides button on the left side of our website; SF lists approximately 100 entities in the area that cater to traveling anglers. Do a little shore fishing or book a trip or two while you in the area with these businesses that support striped bass gamefish.
